What Is AVIF? The Next-Gen Image Format That Beats JPEG and WebP

JPEG has carried the web since 1992. WebP (2010) shaved another 25–30% off image weights. AVIF — AV1 Image File Format — does it again: roughly half the size of an equivalent-quality JPEG, with modern features the older formats simply don’t have. Since 2023–2024 it ships in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera, which means for the first time a next-gen format works for essentially every visitor.

Where AVIF’s compression comes from

AVIF wraps still images in the AV1 video codec — the royalty-free codec built by the Alliance for Open Media (Google, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, and others) to succeed H.264. Video codecs are decades ahead of still-image codecs in compression research: they predict blocks from neighboring blocks, exploit directional patterns, and encode residuals efficiently. Freezing that machinery for single images produces the dramatic size savings.

The numbers that matter

  • Size at matched quality: ~50% smaller than JPEG, ~20% smaller than WebP.
  • Transparency: full alpha channel, like PNG and WebP — but at a fraction of PNG’s size.
  • 10-bit color & HDR: over a billion colors without banding in skies and gradients — JPEG is stuck at 8-bit.
  • Lossless mode: true lossless encoding when every pixel must survive.
  • Animation: live-photo-style sequences in one file, competing with GIF at far better compression.

The honest downsides

AVIF’s compression is expensive to produce: encoding can take 5–10× longer than JPEG at high efficiency settings, which matters for batch jobs. Very large images (over ~4K on the long edge) can hit encoder limits in some tooling. And ancient software — old office suites, decade-old devices — will never open it natively. The standard mitigation: serve AVIF with a JPEG/WebP fallback, or keep masters in JPG and convert per use.

Working with AVIF day to day

Compatibility questions are the most common practical issue, because desktop tools lag browsers. If a .avif file won’t open on your machine, converting it is instant with our AVIF to JPG or AVIF to PNG converters — files are processed locally, nothing is uploaded. Going the other direction, Image to AVIF turns existing JPG/PNG/WebP assets into AVIF for websites. And if you receive a WebP that needs to become AVIF’s more compatible cousin, WebP to JPG handles it in one step.

Should you switch your site to AVIF?

If your CMS or CDN supports automatic AVIF with fallbacks, switch today — the bandwidth savings are free. If you hand-manage images, convert your heaviest pages first (hero images, galleries) and measure. The format is past its early-adopter phase; it’s now simply the most efficient way to ship pixels.
